Time Based Prevention

TBP is an intentional approach to suicide prevention focusing on the “means” (rather than the “why”) most often involved in suicides. TBP strategies are intended to eliminate the hazard of firearms and other lethal means (i.e., medications) being readily available when a person is in distress—particularly in the first 5 minutes after deciding to take one’s life. TBP leverages time, space and distance away from lethal means, and allows for the moment of heightened distress and associated impulse-driven responses to dissipate. Then recovery from suicidal thought, without lethal suicide action, is available.

If you remove access to one lethal method of suicide, someone at risk for suicide will replace it with another.
